Walsh County resident garners support to restore overnight camping at Matejcek Dam

WALSH COUNTY, N.D. (KVRR) — One woman is gaining traction in a petition to restore overnight camping at the Matejcek Dam in Walsh County.

The petition currently has 85 signatures with a goal of 1,000.

It was started days after a notice went up banning overnight camping and a curfew of 10 p.m.

People in the area have shared concerns about safety and cleanliness.

The woman behind the petition says people who have previously camped at the site have brought in personal mowers to mow the grass, toilet paper for the public bathrooms, and cleared out the garbage bins.

“I just want them to see our side of it, the people that were actually being able camping up at the hill and maintaining the area. Our side and not just a one-sided discussion that you had when the public wasn’t informed that this was going to happen at all, ” said Alexa Carter, Petition Starter.

She will be presenting the petition to the Walsh County Water Resource District on August 5th.
