Josef’s School of Hair, Skin, and Body brings students together to learn self care and confidence
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — For the eighth year, Josef’s School of Hair, Skin, and Body has brought together students from 10 to 17 to participate in a camp that will show them how to feel comfortable in their own skin.
“We just want to build up their confidence and just try to help them to know that they’re unique and special and that it starts from the inside, but we can do things like self-care and wellness that just help to bring that forth,” said Kristen Pierre, Josef’s Cosmetology Educator.
In recent years, girls between the ages of seven to eighteen have been reported using an average of six different products on their faces. Many products have been marketed towards young consumers, especially on social media platforms. But some products have been reported to cause burns and irritations in young girls. Pierre said that the camp presents the no’s in those trends.
“It’s more than just doing the most trendy thing. It’s knowing who you are and what your style is, and skin type, hair type, and you know, moving forward with that. The trends are going to come and go, but the foundations of self-care is always going to be the same,” said Pierre.
Kree and Abi are both campers in the sessions and have a parent who is a staff member at Josef’s. Although both have parents who are educators, they say they are still learning.
“I keep on seeing videos on people using hair brushes and like curling their hair with those small hair brushes. And I tried it one time and it got stuck in my hair,” said Abi.
“The things you see on TikTok and YouTube is sometimes not true. Like one time when I got my hair straightened, I saw a thing where you roll your hair up in the brush and you pull it down. And it got stuck in my hair,” said Kree.
Students at the session will learn ways to maintain their hair, take care of their skin, apply makeup, and receive additional self-care tips.
Each year, students from across the region participate in the camp. This year’s sessions are sold out.
