New bluegrass festival to offer workshops along with music

COLFAX, N.D. (KVRR) — A new festival in our area will be giving fans of bluegrass reason to celebrate.

Red River Roots will be held on September 13 and will feature six bluegrass bands.

Along with music there will be hay rides, art vendors, and workshops on dancing and clogging.

Crooked Lane Farm is hosting the festival, east of Colfax.

One thing that separates this festival from ones like WE Fest is that camping is not allowed.

The festival is happening thanks to a grant from North Dakota Council on the Arts, along with work from Red River Roots Collective and Bluegrass Association of North Dakota.

“Kids 13 and under will get in for free, so bring your whole family out there. That’s the whole idea, we want it to be a family-friendly and inviting place. We’ll have games for the kids to do, musical workshops so the musicians can learn something,” said Aaron Niehaus, event organizer and fiddle player for the Fargo band Kohlrabi Soup. “We’ll have a fiddle builder there to talk about how he builds fiddles. All kinds of things to learn, things to do, and awesome people to meet.”

Tickets are $25 in advance, or $30 at the door.
