Update: Evacuation order lifted following grain elevator fire in Shelly, Minnesota,

SHELLY, Minn. (KVRR) – A mandatory evacuation order has been lifted in Shelly, Minnesota, where a large fire broke out at a local grain elevator.

Norman County Sheriff Ben Fall says early indication is that the fire may be due to lightning, though investigation will be ongoing.

The evacuation order was lifted at 1:00 p.m. Friday. Air quality testing indicates a safe zone beginning two blocks from the scene. However, residents are encouraged to remain indoors for the remainder of the day.

Authorities say the city has experienced a loss of pressure in their water system due to the power outage. A loss of water pressure means that contamination could enter the drinking water distribution system.

City residents will receive notice when the water is confirmed safe to drink, which may not be until early next week. Until then, Shelly residents are advised to use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation.

The Minnesota Department of Health advises that water should be brought to a full rolling boil for one minute or longer.

Shelly has about 180 residents and is located about 8 miles north of Halstad, Minn. on U.S. Highway 75.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
