A taste of Icleandic Culture at the Hjmekomst Center

Njals Saga

Moorhead, Minn. (KVRR) — Visitors to the Hjemkomst are getting a taste of Icelandic culture that has been a decade in the making.

The Njal’s Saga Tapestry is a crowd-sewn project in the style of the ancien viking Bayeax Tapestry.

It started in a small Icelandic town in 2013 as a way to honor their history, and has since grown into a 90-meter long saga, with visitors from over 150 countries joining in to help on the project.

Claudia Petursson was visiting Iceland with her friends when she stumbled into the project, and now she’s taking a section of the tapestry on a tour around North America.

“We came into this room and we’re like, oh, cool, Oh, beautiful. And then suddenly they were like, stop talking and sit down and sew. And it’s like, us, you want us to sew. So that’s when I got started. And I just, I couldn’t let it go. I thought it was so fascinating,” North-Amercian Representative Claudia Petursson said.

The tapestry will be leaving tomorrow, eventually they are hoping to place it in a museum in Iceland. You can find more about the project HERE.
