Two dead, three Fargo officers on leave after police-involved shooting in Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) – Late Monday evening, Moorhead Police responded to a domestic assault at this apartment complex. Mutual aid was requested after officers attempted to make contact with the suspect and encountered gunfire.

“Once SWAT assumed operational command inside the apartment complex, there was an exchange of gunfire, resulting in two adult males being struck by gunfire inside the original apartment unit,” said Chris Helmick, Moorhead Police Chief.

Sanford Ambulance had given immediate aid to the injured suspects. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, and another man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

“The identity of the two deceased individuals and the official manner of death will be released at a later time. No officers or other civilians were injured or required medical attention from the exchange of gunfire,” said Helmick.

Three Fargo Police officers who responded to the scene were placed on administrative leave due to the incident, and all the body-worn cameras worn were turned over to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

“The Minnesota protocols come into play. So again, it is a unique situation because we have department policies and such that are going to be different, but as far as how it’s handled on the Minnesota side and the BCA. Regardless whether or not they’re from North Dakota or Minnesota, it’s going to be handled the same according to their protocols.”

Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski commented, saying that once the investigation is over, there may be other procedures made.
