Great Maze Returns to West Acres in Cedar Form
Maze owners say that the new layout is more challenging because they can fit more panels in the same amount of space as before.
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Folks are used to seeing the Great Maze spring up near the Best Buy at West Acres Mall – but they’re seeing a lot more wood than hay this time around.
“It was becoming kind of difficult for us to find a home for the straw afterwards, we had about 1,500 bales in the past, and it was tough for us to get rid of the straw,” explained maze owner Kathy Johnson.
That’s why Johnson and her family made the choice this year to switch to cedar, which ups the sustainability of the maze –
“We can have it for years, and years, and years. The cedar will last us 20-30 years,” she said.
and also the difficulty level.
“Our straw barrels were four feet wide, and now our panels are two inches. So even though it’s the same footprint, the layout is more intricate and detailed. It’s going to be a lot more challenging, which is fun too,” laughed Johnson.
They’ve also upgraded the other main attraction – the corn pit – by putting it under a tent for shade and providing parents with ample seating.
The maze is open through November 6, and has lots of recurring promotions to keep an eye out for, like Dog Days with Homeward Animal Shelter.
Also, on September 16, officials from Guiness World Records will be on hand to certify the maze as the largest wood maze in the world.
