Walsh County Commission selects Elevatus Architecture to construct new jail

GRAFTON, N.D. (KVRR) — It was a two-to-two motion for Elevatus Architecture of Fort Wayne, Indiana, to be the main firm handling construction on the new Walsh County Jail.

Months after voters in Walsh County rejected plans for a new jail and sheriff’s office, the county is moving ahead with building using a sales tax increase that was approved by voters.

A few commissioners had questioned the need for expansion of the jail from a capacity of sixteen to forty-six.

The Sheriff has previously stated that the jail has had numerous issues and, in its condition, would not be operable within a year.

“Elevatus has been with us through committee meetings, and all of the previous drawings were from Elevatus. We’re used to them, we’re used to us, and of course that was a factor in the decision-making, I think on my part anyway,” said Ron Jurgens, Walsh County Sheriff.

Construction is scheduled to begin as soon as next year.
