Senator Klobuchar hosts virtual meeting on breast cancer

Sen. Amy Klobuchar is capping off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by talking about the bipartisan Early Act.

Klobuchar and Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz are spreading the word about the law which took effect in 2010.

It helps women learn about whether their family has a history of breast cancer along with other risk factors.

There is currently a bipartisan bill in congress that would reauthorize The Early Act for another five years.

Klobuchar says that with insurance premiums set to increase starting in November, early detection for diseases like breast cancer are at risk of decreasing.

“If they can’t afford their insurance because their premiums are up, their not going to be able to get the checkups or the treatment that they need,” Klobuchar said. “And we know those premiums are going to double starting November 1. So it’s something that affects all health care, not just breast cancer, but is clearly an issue that’s current right now.”

Both Klobuchar and Wasserman Schultz are breast cancer survivors.
