Breckenridge Football: History made, but looking to make more

The Cowboys are in the Prep Bowl for the first time since 1995, but in search of first title since 1988.

BRECKENRIDGE, Minn. (KVRR) –At 13-0, the Breckenridge Cowboys have already made history making it to Friday’s Class A Prep Bowl, but as the team says: There is still more history to make.

“Well, it’s definitely an amazing feeling, but it’s also something you can’t get too caught up in,” said senior David Erlandson. “You still got a football game to play on Friday. So, at the end of the day, you got to win. We’ve already accomplished so much, but got to accomplish a little bit more to make it really that special.”

For the first time in 30 years, the Breckenridge Cowboys are playing in the Prep Bowl. The Cowboys have been dominant all season. A perfect 13-0 record and beating their opponents by an average of 31 points per contest. But Friday’s opponent in the Class A title game is a historic program, Minneota. The Vikings have not only won 10 total championships and three in a row, but they are riding a 45-game win streak.

“Well, you’ve got to understand, I mean, there’s a reason they haven’t lost in that long,” said Erlandson. “They’re a really good football team, but, you know, all streaks have got to come to an end at some point. Somebody’s got to beat them. So, I mean, we’ve got to do everything we can. I mean, our coaches put a lot of time into prep, and players, we’ve got to go out there and execute and understand that we’re the underdogs in this game. We’ve got something to prove.”

Head Coach Carson Yaggie is in his third season as head coach. The Breckenridge native and former NDSU Bison WR knows his team will need to play a great game Friday to become champions.

“Yeah, they’re an unbelievable team, an unbelievable program. For us to have a chance on Friday, it’s going to take a dang near perfect game from us. They’re great at what they do. They understand who they are. They don’t make mistakes. They don’t beat themselves. And we’ve just got to find a way to keep ourselves in the game and to give ourselves a shot.”

A win over Minneota would be Breckenridge’s second ever football state title after capturing their first in 1988.

“That would be everything,” said senior Kai McDonald. “You dream of this moment when you’re fifth grade or sixth grade or starting to tackle football. That would be so huge for our town. We’ve been waiting for this moment. We have one shot. You’ve got to put everything you can into it.”

Yaggie added, “It’s something you always dream about. It’s something that, you know, you hope eventually comes true. But, I mean, the big thing is, hey, we got a chance. That’s all you can ask for. We got a chance to go do something pretty dang cool, and whatever happens after that happens, and we’re going to make sure we can do everything for these kids to give them as high of a chance as possible.”

And to ensure maximum community support, Friday. No school.

“Having everybody from the community there really creates an awesome atmosphere and just makes playing there feel so special and it just makes it feel like it’s just it’s a bigger game than it really is,” said Erlandson. “So I really can’t put into words how grateful you are for the community.”

Breckenridge vs. Minneota kicks off at 10 A.M. Friday morning. KVRR Sports will have coverage after the game on social media and Friday night on KVRR Sports Extra.
