FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Area high school students were at the Fargodome on Monday, hoping to fill it with food for those in need.

This is the 19th year for the event.

Fill the Dome was started in 2007 by student leaders.

Since that time, students have collected more than 2.7 million pounds of food and over $884,000 to benefit the Great Plains Food Bank.

More than 50 schools participate annually in the program.

This year, the food will be distributed directly to the community through a drive-through system.

“In each box we packed one meal that we’ll give out to families tomorrow who arrive, and we’ve estimated that we packed about 2,000 already. We’ll get an exact number tomorrow. And we think we’ve raised about $50,000, but if you’d still like to donate you can go to fillthedome.org,” said MASA member Corinna Cossette.

Fill the Dome is held in partnership with Dakota Medical Foundation, the Fargodome, Great Plains Food Bank and Hornbacher’s
