Doosan Bobcat suing Caterpillar for patent infringement

MARSHALL, Texas (KFGO/KVRR) – Doosan Bobcat has filed lawsuits against Caterpillar in the U.S. and Europe, accusing its competitor of patent infringement.

In a complaint filed in the Eastern District of Texas, West Fargo-based Doosan Bobcat is asking for a jury trial to settle alleged infringements of five patents. Those patents are for compact track loaders, excavators, wheel loaders, dozers, and components.

The lawsuit says the Bobcat skid steer loader was developed over decades and came on the market in 1962, but Caterpillar did not begin manufacturing skid steer loaders until 1999. The lawsuit also claims Caterpillar reverse engineers competitor products as part of its new product introduction process. It says this allows Caterpillar to unfairly compete with Bobcat and has been a pattern.

Similar complaints are filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission, Unified Patent Court in Europe, and German District Court.
