FARGO (KVRR) – History has been made in Summit League women’s basketball. The North Dakota State Bison have won the regular season championship for the first time in program history after beating the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 95-70.

The nets were cut down at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex (commonly known as the SHAC) as the Bison have clinched the number one seed for the Summit League tournament in Sioux Falls, SD with a 15-1 conference record (26-3 overall). This has been a historic season for NDSU, having their best campaign since the late 1990s. Head Coach Jory Collins has overseen the growth of this roster that can now call themselves the conference regular season champions.

The Bison were led by Avery Koenen who had 29 points and 15 rebounds, a much better performance from Wednesday when the star forward struggled in a loss to South Dakota State. While NDSU turns their focus to the Summit League tournament, they are allowing themselves to enjoy accomplishing what no other Bison roster has ever done before.

The Summit League tournament is set for March 4-8 in Sioux Falls. KVRR Sports will be down there to bring you highlights and reactions from the North Dakota State Bison and the North Dakota Fighting Hawks men’s and women’s basketball programs.
