Moorhead Stars Commit to Minnesota, Focus Turns to State Championship

MOORHEAD (KVRR) – It’s been an eventful past month for Moorhead Spuds athletics. Along with individual and team state championships this winter, three standout football players have announced their commitments to play at the next level — and they’re all headed to the same program.

Quarterback Jett Feeney, wide receiver David Mack and running back Taye Reich have each committed to continue their careers with the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Reich was the first to make it official, announcing his commitment live on KVRR-TV on Feb. 24. The dynamic running back is coming off a standout junior season in which he rushed for more than 1,400 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also made an impact through the air, adding 336 receiving yards and another score.

Just over a week later, on March 3, Mack followed suit. The Spuds’ star wide receiver had a monster junior campaign, hauling in 121 receptions for more than 1,600 yards and 26 touchdowns across 16 games.

The trifecta was completed when Feeney, the Spuds’ signal-caller, also committed to the Gophers. Despite missing five games last season, Feeney threw for more than 2,200 yards and 27 touchdowns while adding 251 rushing yards and five scores on the ground.

For head coach Kevin Feeney, the chance to coach the trio for one more season — and then watch them continue their careers together — is something special.

We knew at a young age that these guys were super talented and had high goals and high standards for themselves,” Feeney said. “Each one had a different journey to get to this point, but it’s exciting they all landed in the same spot. I don’t think that was the intent when they first started, but as it played out it seemed like the right situation for each of them. As a coach and as a dad, I’m super excited that I’ll get to follow them closely.”

While their college futures are set, the trio still has one more season together at Moorhead — and one clear goal.

With recruiting done, we can put all our focus on football and the season,” Jett Feeney said. “The goal is obviously a state championship. We’re going to do everything we can to get that.”

Reich echoed that mindset.

At the end of the day, we have unfinished business,” he said. “We know where we can end up and we have some pretty big goals in mind. We’ve been there before, and we want a different outcome this time.”

For Mack, the expectations are just as high.

We’re going to put in a ton of work this summer,” he said. “Our goal is to go 13-0 and win a state championship. We believe we have the players and the coaches to do it. We’ve been together since eighth grade and this team has a special bond. It’s going to be a really fun year.”

With three future Gophers leading the way, the Spuds are hoping their final season together ends with a championship celebration.
