FARGO — A funeral was held at Fargo National cemetery to honor the life and service of an unclaimed veteran Friday, March 27.

U.S. Marine Corps Private Susan Benson served from 1959 to 1960.

She was laid to rest in full military tradition at the national cemetery as attendees from law enforcement and the Fargo VA braved the cold and the wind.

The Fargo Memorial Honor Guard invited the public to attend the service.

The city’s honor guard provides the service to unclaimed veterans and tried to find and notify their families.

“There was no family today,” said Fargo Honor Guard Genealogist Lisa Folstad. “I did find her son and daughter that were adopted out. She still has one more son that we have not found. As far as I know, he might be in Colorado.”

This is the second unclaimed veteran the honor guard has laid to rest this year. Benson is the cemetery’s first female unclaimed veteran.
