Local students are buzzing about an internship at the Plains Art Museum.

It’s a chance for the students to learn about art and the environment.

9th-grader Calvin Darling is learning about plants and the animals that pollinate them at the Plains Arts Museum Buzz Lab Teen Internship.

Studying insects is an interest he’s had since listening to a bug presentation in kindergarten.

“The whole day I just kept on saying, the bug man’s coming, the bug man’s coming, the bug man’s coming. I just was hooked from there,” said Calvin.

He’s been teaching his fellow interns about bugs at the internship and it’s also a chance for him to learn even more.

The interns are focusing their studies on the importance of pollinators like bees and the important role they play in sustaining agriculture.

“Really fascinating how something so small pretty much produces all our food. Just how cool some of them look,” said Calvin.

Buzz Lab interns are taking the information they learn here at the White Earth Tribal and Community College and taking it online so the entire community can benefit from their experience.

“We are creating a social media campaign that will be connected to plants that are tied to pollinators and increasing pollinator food for the community,” said Trip Organizer Melissa Kossick.

This is the second year for the internship.

“I know a lot about plants and I’m really interested in learning more about them,” said Buzz Lab Intern Emma Swenson.

“It’s been awesome, met a lot of cool people, made a couple new friends. It’s been a blast,” said Calvin.

It’s a chance for these busy bees like Calvin to learn about the environment and try to make positive changes.

Eight students returned from last year’s Buzz Lab and they are part of this year’s leadership team.
