Minnesota Sen. Al Franken says the new regulations for rail safety are a good start but overall, they’re just not enough.
Even though the oil that was being transported near Heimdal, North Dakota last week had reduced volatility, it still exploded during a derailment.
Franken says it needs to be reduced even more.
He also says the five year timeline for fixing rail cars to meet new safety standards is too long and he wants it done in two or three years.
Sen. Al Franken (D)Minnesota: “I’ve asked the Federal Railroad Administration to look at rerouting some of these so they aren’t going through urban areas, do some training with first responders and ask that they slow down when going through populated areas.”
