Barnesville High School students witness a distracted driver mock crash.
The crash shows students the dangers and consequences of distracted driving.
No one could prepare for what they were about to see.
A mock crash showing what could happen in the blink of an eye when a driver is distracted.
Senior Madison Lafayette says, “I think it’s a good experience for everyone to see because you never know what could happen.”
Four student actors were used in the mock crash.
It revolves around a group of friends heading out on the road.
The trip turns deadly when one friend is thrown from the car and two others are trapped in the back seat.
Junior Tabetha Fanner says, “He just lost a good friend and that’s something I would never be able to take back…there’s no do overs.”
Barnesville Police and Clay County Sheriffs officials hope the crash helps students stay safe in the coming weeks during prom and graduation season.
Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist says, “It’s a way to let them know that these tragic events have happened in years past. A lot of people suffer from those tragics.”
The mock crash is an effort to help promote safe and smart driving behavior as part of the Clay County TZD, Toward Zero Death, Safe Roads Coalition.
Bergquist adds, “Our hopes are that we get those kids to think differently and be smart and get ready for college.”
The events of this mock crash are real scenarios.
And those watching have been changed.
Lafayette says, “I’ll just be more cautious and I’ll always look around and make sure that you’re always being safe.”
Fenner says, “I’ll probably not be texting and driving, pay more attention to the road and make sure all my friends and whoever’s with me is buckled up.”
The ending of this mock crash does not have to be your reality.
Prom at Barnesville High School is this Saturday night at 7:30.
