Training For The Fargo Marathon

May is just around the corner so runners are amidst training for the Fargo Marathon. While training, runners have to consider their nutrition and exercise routines.

Some people run for competition, while others run for pure passion.

Zach Banister says, “I’ve done two full marathons in the Twin Cities back–to–back in October and I’m actually scheduled for my third full marathon.”

Finishing a marathon is an accomplishment that less than 1% of people in the world can say they’ve achieved. And runners say the key to that success is training.

Banister says, “There’s no miracle workout. You just have to get out and get the miles in is the biggest thing.”

When preparing for any type of run, athletes say you want to gradually increase your mileage between a 3 to 6–month time frame.

The training runner says, “Increase your weekly mileage by 10% each week. And you want to have a couple weeks increasing your mileage and then a week staying even. Then a couple weeks building up and then a week staying even.”

Banister say another part of preparing your body for a successful run, includes fueling it with a mix of carbs, protein, fruits and vegetables.

Run-Centric/Family Wellness Coordinator Matt Melchior says, “You also want to be planning a proper diet as well and you want to practice that diet throughout training for the marathon.

It doesn’t matter running level you’re at in May. There’s running events for all.

Melchior adds, “Start out small. Start with a 5K or something. There’s plenty of 5k’s that are fun. They’re leisure. You can go at your own pace. You don’t even have to run the whole time.”

Registration for all the Fargo–Marathon runs are still open.
