Gun Owners React To President’s Plan To Tighten Gun Sales Laws
As the President announces plans for new gun control measures, the Fargo area welcomes thousands of gun owners for the Dakota Territory Gun Show.
When the doors opened at 9 am for the Dakota Territory Gun Show, a long line of people were already waiting.
It’s one of the most anticipated gun shows in the area and it comes at a time when the gun control debate has taken center stage.
It’s an exciting day for Daethal Dockter.
“Young and old and kids and wives it’s a great deal because we like to have the kids come out, we like to have the wives come out with their husbands it helps all of us,” says Dakota Territory Board Member Daethal Dockter.
Guns have always been an important part of Dockter’s life and while a strong believer in the second amendment, when it comes to background checks he says there’s room for improvement.
“We need more good background checks. We’re doing things legally we would like to have everyone else do things legally too,” says Dockter.
On Friday, President Obama announced he will move forward with a set of executive actions to expand background check requirements.
“We know we can’t stop every act of violence but if we tried to stop even one. What if congress did something, anything to protect our kids from gun violence,” says Obama.
It’s a move that has sparked some big debate. But for many gun owners in the area they say an additional background check is okay.
“As long as it doesn’t affect my rights to keep and bear arms I don’t care,” says Show Manager Bill Braun.
Thousands of guns are here today everything from a pistol to this semi-automatic.
Gwen Damlo is hoping to get her permit to carry a concealed weapon. She too is OK with the background check, but isn’t sure how much it will do.
“I think that those who aren’t law abiding are going to continue with their ways of not being law abiding,” says Damlo.
“I’m a law abiding citizen. I don’t care if they do a background check. It doesn’t matter to me,” says Braun.
President Obama will meet with the Attorney General Monday to finalize the plan and will present it to the public soon after.
As for the Dakota Territory Gun Show, it continues throughout the weekend at the Fargo Air Museum.
