How to protect yourself from frostbite in this bitter cold
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – The cold temperatures and the wind chill are taking a toll on people across the region. It can lead to issues like frostbite for those that are outside for any amount of time.
That means wearing gloves, a hat and proper footwear when you are outside. Essentia Health experts say to treat cold exposure get into a warm environment and slowly warm yourself up.
Do not rub your hands, that can damage the skin. One of the biggest factors people face in the area is the unrelenting winds.
“Wind chill is a significant factor especially in this area,” said Joseph Halvorson, a nurse practitioner in internal medicine for Essentia Health. “Our bodies try to maintain kind of a bubble of warmth around us. Winds and even breezes in cold temperatures just kind of rips that away. It becomes much more dangerous. Coverage, even with base layers, even with thin layers are going to be much more beneficial than having exposed skin.”
Also avoid running into a hot shower or running your hands under hot water in the sink. That can cause more issues to your skin.
