NDSU Sweeps UND in Hoops Doubleheader

Bison Men and Women's Basketball Each Defend Their Home Court V Fighting Hawks

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR)– North Dakota State hosted North Dakota in Men’s and Women’s Basketball yesterday in Fargo. The men’s team tipped off first in a battle that lived up to the hype. The rivals played an extremely competitive game in front of over 5,000 fans. North Dakota came into the game in first place in the Summit League Men’s Basketball standings. With just over six minutes left it looked as if North Dakota would complete the season sweep. A technical foul on the Fighting Hawks however proved to be a major turning point. The Bison went on an 8-0 scoring run to 62-61 lead with momentum in their favor, NDSU was able to ultimately pull away in the final minutes of the game to earn the 73-68 victory. Junior forward Andrew Morgan led all scorers with 27 points. The victory now puts NDSU at 15-14 on the season, 8-6 in conference, and 10-3 on their home floor.

“Just a great effort by our guys.. I thought it was a little bit like the game up there. Where up there we controlled the better party of it and they made some plays down the stretch to get us. I thought they did a really good job of controlling the game. They got a maturity about them; a toughness about them. But there was just that turn of events there in the second half and Andrew Morgan really got going and he was terrific,” said head coach, Dave Richman.

The Women’s teams took the floor next with a season sweep on the line for the Bison. North Dakota took a 2-0 lead early but after NDSU took at 3-2 advantage from the foul line, they led the rest of the game on their way to a 107-80 win. Senior point guard, Kacie Borwoicz scored half of North Dakota’s points netting 40 in the losing effort, helping the team hang around throughout most of the game. NDSU has now won seven straight games and moves to 11-1 at home. Head coach Jory Colins spoke about being prepared, riding the momentum created by the men’s teams win and getting off to a fast start after the game.

“Great day to be a Bison. It was awesome for the men to handle that game and then to get to come in a little bit later and play in front of that crowd. It was a lot of fun. I know our players felt the juice and really, really enjoyed that. I think that was a big part of us getting off to a really good start in the first quarter… and then again it was the same at their place, we got up big early and we knew they were going to come back.. and I felt the same way today and they are a very, very competitive team and clawed back in it there to cut it to single digits and then I thought the last 13 minutes we played some pretty good basketball,” said head coach, Jory Collins.
