DRISCOLL, N.D. (KVRR) – A passenger was hurt and Interstate 94 was closed near Driscoll after some cars and a semi hit a herd of cattle that wandered onto the interstate.

The crash happened shortly after 1 on Monday morning.

According to a release by the North Dakota Highway Patrol, an unknown number of cattle escaped from a pasture near the interstate and the town of Driscoll.

NDHP Sergeant Jeremiah Bohn says Ewert Nel of Edmore, was driving east in a semi and  crashed into several cattle that had gathered on the interstate, causing the semi to enter the median and overturn.

A Ford Escape, drive by 26-year-old Kaycee Anderson of Napoleon, was also headed east and struck the cattle on the interstate.

A Ford Fusion, driven by Dina Diamant of Bigelow, Minnesota, was headed west on the interstate when it too struck cattle.

Diamant along with three passengers were taken to CHI/St. Alexius Medical Center for possible injuries.

In all, twenty-five cattle were killed in the collisions. The cattle are owned by Gerald Schmidt.

Both lanes of I-94 were blocked by vehicles or cattle. The highway patrol rerouted traffic through Exit 190 until the scene was cleared.

In the meantime, traffic is being rerouted onto the overpass and back down onto the interstate. The westbound lane was reopened at approximately 5:05 a.m., with the eastbound lane open by approximately 6:05 a.m.
