10-Year-Old Fargo Girl Has Been Battling Brain Cancer For a Year

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Reagan Newton, known to her family as a sassy, caring, and loving sister and daughter has been receiving treatment for glioblastoma. This type of cancer usually strikes adults between the ages of 45 and 70. But for Reagan, it came early and hasn’t left.

“The clinical trials and all the drug trials and stuff are aimed towards adults. There’s nothing aimed towards the children so she doesn’t qualify for any clinical trials or anything. So it’s just standard of care with what they generally do for the adults. You know the chemo, radiation, and surgery, but she wasn’t even able to finish chemo,” said Heather Newton, Mom.

Within the past year, Reagan has gone through four brain surgeries. With her constant trips to the hospital Reagan and her brother are home-schooled.

“She has to have her blood platelets three times a week and the Evasion’s every other week on Fridays. So we’re constant ..constantly at the doctor’s eight, nine, ten hours a day,” said Heather Newton.

Financially, Heather and her family are not as stable. Her husband and two sons are currently living in Oklahoma in order to pay for the bills. But Heather and her two children live in Fargo in an Airbnb.

“We’ve had an army behind us and everybody has been great but you know cancer isn’t a couple of months..it’s generally a few years of this. And so it’s just getting through that without losing our home, our vehicles or having our cell phones shut off.”

While Reagan has been doing the best she can through her treatments she wants others dealing with cancer to do the same.

“For everyone who is going through cancer treatment, I wish you the best,” said Reagan Newton.

Heather has started a GoFundMe to help pay for her daughter’s treatments and to keep them financially stable.
