Cass County Sheriff’s Office warns of new scam

FARGO (KVRR) –  The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says a new scam targets family members of people being held in jail.

Officials say someone claiming to be a deputy contacted a victim and claimed that their incarcerated family member qualified for the Community Supervision Unit ankle bracelet monitoring program.

The scammer requested an electronic payment before participation in the program could begin, but the sheriff’s office says payments are only accepted in cash or by money order and the payment must be made in person at the Cass County Jail.

Officials say deputies never contact people and request payment over the telephone.

Anyone with questions can contact the Community Service Unit at (701) 271-2909 weekdays between 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
