Charlie’s Place, a coffee shop staffed by people with intellectual disabilities, closing

FARGO (KVRR-KFGO) — Charlie’s Place, a south Fargo coffee shop staffed by people with intellectual disabilities, announced it is closing this month.

The announcement, posted to social media, says the shop is struggling to keep up with expenses, and staff were forced to make the decision to close.

“Charlie’s Place was created to show how our individuals who are cognitively challenged have so very much to give to society—and just as much to gain in return through confidence, purpose, and new friendships,” the announcement said. “Because of this community’s support, our individuals found meaningful work, a sense of belonging, and relationships that will last far beyond our time here. That can never be taken away from them.”

While a closing date isn’t set, the business hopes to stay open the first two weeks of January. The drive-through is already closed.

Though the coffee shop will close, Art and Soul Studios, which is in the same building at Charlie’s Place, will continue to give people with disabilities a space to be be creative.

For now, Charlie’s Place is open Monday–Thursday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. It’s located at 3244 51st St S Suite B, Fargo, ND 58104.
