New mattress material developed with help from NDSU used by national luxury mattress maker

The new mattress material is the product of joint research initiative between Comfort King, NDSU and Centers of Excellence Commission.

FARGO — North Dakota State University and mattress company Comfort King are taking a material they developed to the National stage.

It’s a gel that is currently used in many of Comfort King’s mattresses, but now luxury mattress maker King Koil is taking interest by using the material in some of their new models.

The gel is the product of an eight-years of work, and involved Comfort King, NDSU, and the Centers of Excellence (COE) Commission.

While many mattresses have a gel layer, the new material arranges the gel into spiral gel grid design, whereas the gel in standard matresses use a grid design.

Comfort King has been using the new material for the past five years in their luxury mattresses.

Founder Chris Larson applied for and was awarded a patent for the technology in 2023.

“It’s exclusive in our area. You can only get this material at Comfort King in the Midwest,” said Ben Enney, manager of the Comfort King in Fargo. “Right now it’s in about thirty stores in southern California, but we expect in the very short future for it to be nationwide with their brand.”

Comfort King has an agreement with King Koil so the company doesn’t sell mattresses with the new gel technology in shared markets.
