Fargo Demonstration Supporting Iran Deal

A group of people in Fargo are urging U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp to support a deal with Iran that would limit their nuclear power.

Around a dozen people held a public demonstration to support the deal in downtown Fargo.

Stewart Herman is a retired religions professor from Concordia.

He helped organize this demonstration to urge U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp to support the deal with Iran that would limit their nuclear power and relieve sanctions.

“We want to keep the nuclear capacity of Iran under control and the best way to do that is to work with them,” said Herman.

Some are criticizing the plan because Iran could be involved with its own nuclear inspections.

Herman says he’s visited Iran multiple times and the country gets a bad, anti–U.S. reputation.

“Everybody we met was polite and friendly, kindly disposed towards America. Now that’s only a tourist’s eyes view of course, I’m not a diplomat,” said Herman.

“Many of the people here support the Iranian deal because they simply want diplomacy with the country and they even have a petition to support the cause.”

“It tries to give diplomacy a chance, rather than trying to become, you know belligerent with yet another nation,” said Steve Poitras of Fargo.

Senator Heitkamp has not taken a stance on the issue yet but she says she will weigh the options for both sides.

Republicans are unanimously opposed to the agreement and Congress’s deadline to vote on it is September 17th.
