Moorhead City Budget Proposal Calls for Property Tax Hike for More Police Patrols

The Moorhead City Council got a sneak peak of the preliminary upcoming city budget.

And a small hike in property taxes might be part of it.

KVRR’s Sarah Brechbill joins us live to tell us why.

Sarah?

TJ and Alison, a small property tax increase is expected in the new budget.

To give you an idea, for the owner of a $155,000 home, that would be about an $8.00 increase.

The reason?

Moorhead wants to add 3 more police officers to its force.

And that’s something Lieutenant Tory Jacobson says is desperately needed.

“We are understaffed. We have seen significant increases in types of calls that require more officers, require more lengthy investigations, the number of incidents are higher, the geography is higher,” says Lieutenant Jacobson.

The increase would include adding an officer already on the streets to the regional gang unit, a new patrol officer and a records specialist.

A more detailed city budget is expected before the end of the month.
