Music Makes Us Whole

Music Makes Us Whole is a new initiative striving to ensure students receive the music education they deserve.

Organizers say music equips students with tools that are crucial to a successful adulthood.

Music is a passion for Moorhead High School students. Senior Amie Schulz couldn’t imagine life without it.

Amie Schulz said, “It’s just something about it just, makes me feel good.”

Research has found students who take more than one year of music experience in high school can improve ACT English and Math scores by up to seven percent.

Moorhead Orchestra Teacher Jon Larson said, “They are reading and in the process helping students understand this equals this sound this equals this length of sound and they’re able to translate that.”

The Music Makes Us Whole campaign requires schools to have a quality music programs.

Moorhead High passes with things like Mr. Larson specializing in music education and classrooms designed for music.

Music helps students with core classes and also working with others. It’s clearly the case here in Moorhead.

Moorhead High Senior Nathan Kaiser said, “It’s always nice to feel like you’re part of a team to help out and you’re contributing, so i feel like music and orchestra is a really big way for people who, maybe sports isn’t their forte for something they can do instead.”

Since Minnesota schools have seen a decline in the music departments, the campaign is trying to make programs as successful as Moorhead’s. And get kids loving music like Amie.

It’s really helpful to just have something that you can pour you’re creative heart into,” said Shulz.
