Local Celebration For TV Legend

Some people in Fargo are celebrating a TV icon’s 112th birthday.

Although he passed away in 1992, more than 400 fans came to “A Tribute to Lawrence Welk” at the Fargo Theatre.

Welk became one of America’s most beloved bandleaders and was the creator and host of “The Lawrence Welk Show.”

TV Guide has ranked Welk as one of the 50 greatest TV stars of all time.

The tribute was part of the live variety show “Dakota Air.”

“I used to watch it years ago when my grandmother made me, but it was a very good show, and today at church I received tickets from someone that couldn’t make it, so I called my mother right away and she’s very anxious to see this,” said Diane Berggren of Moorhead.

The Lawrence Welk Show premiered in 1951 and still runs in syndication today.
