The first lady of North Dakota makes her way to Park Christian School in Moorhead to recognize an outstanding student.

Seventh grader Lauren Knoll of Fargo has been picked as North Dakota’s top middle level youth volunteer in the 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

Knoll has been volunteering at homeless shelters at least once a month for the past nine years. She says volunteering has taught her several life lessons.

“I’ve learned that it’s not all about me. It’s a really big world out there and sometimes we get all consumed like self-consumed about ourselves when it’s really about all those other people out there,” says Knoll.

She receives a $1,000 award and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.
