Connecting Fargo-Moorhead

Fargo and Moorhead leaders are still trying to find a compromise on a proposed bus circulator that would connect the two city’s downtowns.

Right now there are just two stops planned at the Moorhead Center Mall.

City leaders from Fargo and Moorhead are working out the details of the proposed bus circulator that would connect both city’s downtowns.

All parties agree the circulator is a good idea.

“It really is trying to connect our two communities to do what’s best for the downtown in Moorhead and the businesses, and the downtown in Fargo and connecting the two,” said Subcommittee Chairman Steve Gehrtz.

Now, they must work out the details, one being; where does the bus stop?

Moorhead has two stops at the Moorhead Center Mall.

Fargo has six throughout its downtown.

An idea being thrown around is having the bus stop at the Hjemkomst Center and Moorhead Billiards.

Hjemkomst Center officials say if the bus route does have a stop here, it would benefit many in the area.

“I could foresee the tourists downtown who stay downtown coming on over to the museum when they find out how easy it is to get here,” said Hjemkomst Center  Executive Director Maureen Kelly Jonason.

Sarah Kenz lives in Moorhead and goes to the Hjemkomst Center often for meetings.

She says it could be beneficial for the city.

“I think it’s good. I think it’s good for both Fargo and Moorhead, to really promote people to visit both parts of Fargo–Moorhead,” said Kenz.

If the Hjemkomst Center is chosen as a stop, it could potentially help a nearby home for the elderly.

“I can foresee an increase in visitors to the museum as well as just a safer transport of our seniors,” said Maureen Kelly Jonason.

Along with connecting the downtowns, the circulator would also help alleviate parking in downtown Fargo.

If both sides of the river agree on a proposal, they hope buses would start running by mid–May.

The subcommittee for the circulator will start to meet on a weekly basis next Tuesday.
