After 23 years, Rich Mattern is retiring from NDSU, but he’ll remain mayor of West Fargo.

Mattern joined the university as a communications specialist for the Extension Service after working in TV news for 17 years.

He said he was initially thinking of retiring last year but once he learned he had prostate cancer he decided to stay on a little longer.

Mattern now plans on taking some time off and focusing on exercise before he eventually looks for a part-time job.

“It’s just been a thrill working here so I’m going to miss all that. But on the other hand, I’m going into a new adventure and there’s just tons of things that I want to do,” Mattern says.

Mattern says in regards to his prostate cancer that he is doing great.
