A toddler is dead after a tragic accident in the alley behind his home in Fargo.

KVRR’s Brittany Ford joins us live at the scene with the latest details.

Police say that 28-year-old Kyle Schilcht hugged his 20-month old son, Easton goodbye in the home before accidentally running him over while backing out of the driveway.

Fargo police responded to a call that a 20-month-old child was struck by an SUV just after 12:20pm Sunday afternoon.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver has been identified as the boy’s father.

“At this point we don’t feel there aren’t any criminal charges that are going to be filled. It remains under investigation from our perspective it was just a tragic accident,” said Lt. Mike Mitchell Fargo Police.

Police say there were no witnesses and it’s still unclear how the boy got out of the house.

One neighbor that declined to be on camera explained to us that vandals in the area have knockout out many of the wooden fences like the one behind me, making it easy for a child to crawl out.

13-year resident Kristen Royal lives two houses down.

She says the flow of traffic in the alleyway has always been a problem.

“You got to be aware of everything your running around animals, little kids, I mean college students that are walking and on bikes. I mean I don’t know how many times I’ve seen somebody at the end of my alley get hit on a bike by a car or run right into a car,” said Kristine Royal a Neighbor.

Another neighbor who witnessed police on the scene was shocked to find out what actually happened.

“I feel very sad, and it’s kind of crazy like you said it’s just very close to home, and an eye opener you just got to be aware of your surroundings,” said Alex DeRocher a Neighbor.
