Beltrami County Deputy Sheriff Hit After High Speed Chase

The Beltrami County Deputy Sheriff is seriously injured after being hit by a driver who was fleeing police.

Red Lake Police and FBI agents were chasing a car on Highway 89 Friday afternoon around 5:30.

The driver, 20-year-old Nodin Makwa of Red Lake, was reportedly involved in an assault involving weapons and was armed with a firearm and a sword. They called Beltrami County officials for back up.

They eventually barricaded Makwa and the officers began to approach his car when he tried to flee again by speeding in reverse. This resulted in him striking the sheriff.

Authorities eventually did stop him and he is awaiting formal criminal charges.

The deputy sheriff was flown to a hospital and is currently in stable condition.
