Former Gov. Schafer Gets Big Payday From UND

Former North Dakota governor Ed Schafer will be handsomely compensated to take over as interim president at UND.

He will be paid more than $33,200 per month. Although temporary, the salary will make the former Republican governor the highest-paid president at North Dakota’s 11 public colleges.

The state Board of Higher Education unanimously approved Schafer’s appointment last month. He will take over on a temporary basis when UND President Robert Kelley retires on Jan. 14.

Schafer signed a contract on Wednesday to hold the job from January. 15th to June 20th, 2016. Schafer will be making about $2,000 more a month than Kelley. Schafer was governor from 1992-2000. He was U.S. secretary of agriculture from 2008-2009.
