Area Students Learn What’s Jazzy About Music History

Area fifth graders had the chance to learn about one of America’s most important eras of music: Jazz.

The Learning Bank Experience hosted a history of jazz performance for students at Fargo South High.

The FM Kicks band performed a variety of genres for students including Dixieland jazz, 1920’s swing, and popular theme songs.

Each song was followed by a brief explanation about its history.

Organizers say the FM Kicks band shows music has no age.

“One of their normal members might be a person that taught band before, and he’s now in his 80’s or they have a 19-year-old next to a guy in his 80’s. So we want kids to play music for life. We hope this generates some interest in something for them they’ll start in middle school,” said Denese Odegaard of the Learning Bank.

More than 2,000 fifth graders from Fargo, West Fargo, and Moorhead attended the concert
