A History of Violence: Schumacher, Murder and Domestic Violence

Officer Jason Moszer wasn’t the first person allegedly shot and killed by Marcus Schumacher.

Schumacher was charged with murder in a 1988 shooting in Grand Forks that left a teenager dead and another man injured.

Schumacher served his short sentence after a jury convicted him of negligent homicide in the 1988 shooting .

Schumacher was accused of shooting 17-year-old Maynard Clauthier to death and wounding his friend, Brad Boswell, after an argument in Grand Forks.

Schumacher got 10 years after pleading to manslaughter, but the plea was thrown out by the state Supreme Court on appeal.

A jury then convicted him of negligent homicide.

In 2012, Schumacher was living in Fargo with his wife and16-year-old son when he was hit with a domestic violence charge.

Cass County Prosecutors say Schumacher went through 24 sessions of domestic violence counseling.

They agreed to drop the domestic violence assault charges in exchange for a disorderly conduct conviction.

Prosecutors say under North Dakota state law, once Schumacher served his sentence and ten years had passed, he’d be eligible to own a gun again.

We don’t know if the gun Schumacher allegedly used in the standoff was obtained legally.

We reached out to his family but they did not respond to our request for an interview.
