New Book Says “All the Single Ladies” Set to Take Elections by Storm

A new book out on women voters is making waves among political candidates and analysts.

The book – “All the Single Ladies” says single women voters carry more weight than ever before.

More so, possibly, than married people and single men.

Our local analyst say it’s true and it’s changing the way politicians campaign.

Single women outnumber married women and have since 2009 and it’s changing the landscape of this election.

Don’t call it the Hillary factor.

Political scientists say the parties have courted the single ladies for years.

“No, no,” said MSUM Political Scientist Dr. Barbara Headrick. “Because this was brought up in 2012, in 2014.”

This book could have been written for Red River voters.

League of Women Voters members say although they don’t track members’ marital status, our local branch is one of the youngest in the nation.

“I don’t know, perhaps because it’s a college town? Word of mouth carries weight, and Fargo is a very word of mouth town,” said longtime League member Carol Sawicki.

“It’s not tied just to the under 30’s. A lot more people are like me, maybe just unlucky in love,” said Dr. Headrick.

Unlucky or not, single woman voters are reaping the benefits when it comes to issues,

Child care costs, college costs, and family leave issues are all getting more attention this year.

“That has gotten slightly more attention, because women vote more than men,” said Dr. Headrick.

They do: except for one problem…who’s busier than a single mom?

“People don’t have time for meetings anymore, the way the League used to work. But it’s starting to adapt,” said Carol.

So make time to get to the polls.

Because this time, it’s ladies first.

The book by journalist Rebecca Traister is getting mentioned on political websites all over the country.
