RedHawks’ Laber Dies at the Age of 30

A local baseball legend is dead at the age of 30.

Jake Laber’s career began at Fargo North, continued at NDSU, and finished with the RedHawks.

Jake Laber had been starring in this area, in some capacity since pre-2004, that was at least his last year in high school at Fargo North.

Yet shockingly, Laber is now gone, the reason why or how we still don’t know, but the void created is immense.

Laber is perhaps most associated for the work he did with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, his first of two tenures began in 2008, and continued in 2010.

Yet it was his easy going personality off the field that those around him say made him a fan favorite.

None knew him baseball wise quite like his former manager Doug Simunic, who like most everyone else we’ve talked to about Laber, says he’s shocked.

“What a tragedy at 30 years old. I mean, this is a guy who was vibrant, a guy who was strong. A guy that you wouldn’t think something bad would happen to him. And, I don’t know, just sad day,” said Simunic.

Again, as of now, we do not know a cause of death.

We do know that Laber had recently begun cancer treatment.

As if there needed to be more bad news, the RedHawks confirmed Laber was set to get married this Friday.
