MSUM, McKinley Elementary Students Tackle Teaching and Learning

MSUM 3rd Year Education Students Practice Teaching at McKinley Elementary School

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSUM third year education students stopped at McKinley Elementary School in Fargo to practice their teaching skills.

The college students taught concepts to the third, fourth and fifth grade students regarding government, economics, geography, and history.

They made sure the lessons were fun and interactive.

The college students also incorporated 21st Century skills and STEAM skills into their teachings.

“Usually we do lessons in class, but that’s with college students pretending to be elementary students,” said MSUM professor John Benson. “This gives them a chance to work with regular elementary students. They do it about four or five times so they really have to think on their feet.”

Benson said over the many years of doing this cooperative learning exchange, both the college and elementary students have enjoyed it.
