City Ordinances and Deadlines for Shoveling Snow in Public Areas

City of Fargo ordinances show that snow must be removed from your sidewalks by 9 pm after the snow ends

FARGO, ND — Living in the metro means snow will be around the valley for much of the winter.

But do you know when it’s time to start shoveling?

City of Fargo ordinances show that snow must be removed from your sidewalks by 9 pm after the snow ends.

Snow can only be dumped onto the boulevard if one exists and not on the street.

Mark Williams, the public works manager, says excess snow is plowed and removed by city crews, not for flood protection, but for traffic flow.

“Some of the larger intersections over time that have expanded have created a situation where there’s minimal space to be able to store snow and in addition our downtown has very little space to store snow so those areas we will after an event go and haul them to designated snow dumps within the city,” Williams said.

In Moorhead, the snow removal deadline is also 9 pm after it stops snowing.

In West Fargo, you have 48 hours after a snow event to remove it from your sidewalks.
