Smoke Filled Apartment Near Downtown Fargo Sends Man to Hospital

Officers found smoke coming from the sixth floor unit and a tenant who refused to come out.

FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) – Fargo police responded to a disturbance call shortly before 5.a.m Monday at Univerisity Drive Manor, 1201 2nd Avenue North after some residents of the high rise apartment reported hearing a tenant yelling for help.

Sgt. Troy Hannig says when officers arrived, they found smoke coming from the sixth floor unit and a tenant who refused to come out. After some time, police were able to talk the man into coming out.

Officers were cautious as they had previous contact with the man. Previously, he used a knife to stab his apartment door. The man was taken to the hospital by ambulance to be checked. Whether any charges will be filed has not been determined.

The fire filled the apartment and hallway with smoke but firefighters were able to quickly get the smoke out and there was no serious damage.

Some residents of the building self-evacuated once fire alarms sounded.
