Discover Minnesota: Thief River Falls

Thief River Falls Celebrates History & Culture

Our virtual road trip this week takes us to Thief River Falls, where they make sure to celebrate the city’s history and culture.

The city lies where the Thief River and the Red Lake River meet. There are plenty of opportunities for fun on the water.
There’s also plenty of exploring next to the river.
A seven-mile river walk runs through nine different parks and several historic sites, including the old train depot and a statue of Chief Red Robe, an important figure in the city’s past.
You can also try to find all 18 Norwegian troll statues around town, a tribute to many of the city’s residents.

Laura Stengrim, Executive Director of Visit Thief River Falls, says, “We have actually been named the most Norwegian city with a population of over 5,000 people. So that’s in the whole United States. The stats came from the U.S. Census Bureau.”
