Disc Golfers gather in Fargo for big cash tournament
72 Disc Golf players from around the Midwest come together to compete in a tourney at the Fargodome with cash prizes on the line.
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR)- 72 Disc Golf players from around the Midwest come together to compete in a tourney at the Fargodome with cash prizes on the line.
“It’s growing immensely. A couple years ago tournaments used to fill, they might only feel up to half capacity or three quarters of capacity,” said Brett Burch Owner of Big Cat Disc Golf.
“Our disc golf community is pretty strong,” said Nolan McCarthy Tournament Director.
“The way everything is trending with the way everything is trending in outdoor sports being very prevalent in the past couple of years, it’s grown immensely and so now tournaments are filling in a matter of hours,” said Burch.
“Most of our tournaments sell out rather quickly, this one sold out in about 8 hours. The community is just getting stronger and stronger everyday,” said McCarthy.
Disc golf is typically played on fields outside but tournament directors with Cass Clay Disc Golf, had the idea to use the Fargodome as a venue.
The sport’s rules are similar to traditional golf, you’re trying to get the frisbee into these nets within three throws.
At the end of the game throw tallies are added up. This tournament featured four divisions, Professional, Advanced, Rec, and Women.
The winner of each bracket will receive $100.
Organizers say this is a sport and community that welcomes new members.
“One of the best things to me about the disc golf community is that we’re all encouraging, everyone wants everyone to enjoy the game. The same top tier players and new players, play together on a regular basis and just love the game,” said McCarthy.
“It’s literally the best sport in the world you’ve got to give it a chance,” said Burch.
