Holiday Season Brings Out More Porch Pirates
WEST FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Porch pirates are an issue year round but with the holiday season approaching there are a lot more packages for the taking.
With many comments and videos being posted online recently, it seems the season for poaching has begun.
“To have that target of opportunity is much higher so when we have that target of opportunity meaning people are ordering probably more this time of year than other times of the year or maybe there’s more valuable pieces being delivered.” says Moorhead Police Department’s Captain Deric Swenson.
Local law enforcement recommend buying front door cameras to capture the thefts on video.
“The camera systems are always a help in hopes of law enforcement. Really helps spread the news to neighbors as to this is going on in our neighborhood. And with neighbors, be a good neighbor, watch out for your neighbors if you know they’re not home or work during the day, go get their packages and let them know.” says West Fargo Police Department’s Rhonda Jorgensen.
Lock boxes are also another option to protect your packages.
But planning your deliveries ahead of time and using the community as an extra set of eyes is where to start.
Swenson also said. “For those people who are working during the day or not home when those packages maybe delivered. That’s time when you start collaborating with your neighbors possibly and having those packages picked up or delivered to your neighbors or at least picked up by your neighbors. There are other options with certain companies where they can access things like your garage and place them inside your garage.”
Local law enforcement say to not approach a porch pirate, instead call 911.
