Funeral held for Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy
BEULAH, N.D. (KVRR) – It’s a somber day across the state of North Dakota, as a funeral was held for Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin. It is never easy for anyone when it comes to death. Especially after the death of a law enforcement member in the line of duty.
“Deputy Sheriff Paul Martin. Our Deputy, your husband, father, grandfather, brother, son. He gave his final breath in the brave defense of others.” said ND Attorney General Drew Wrigley.
His death is being investigated after he was killed during a pursuit with Ian Cramer, Senator Kevin Cramer’s son. Martin, who was 53-years-old, was outside his vehicle preparing stop sticks when Cramer allegedly drove into the vehicle which hit Martin. Cramer is facing felonies and manslaughter in connection to his death. But that all seems to fall to the background during this time, as family members, friends and colleagues of Deputy Martin mourn the loss of the 18-year veteran. Holding a funeral in his honor.
“But I assure you today. That today there’s not one tear that will be wasted. Our grief is not in vain nor is it without hope. Every handshake, every hug, every tear filled tissue is a memorial to Paul.” said Philip Nelson, a Mercer County Sheriff’s Office chaplain.
Attorney General Drew Wrigley offered words of encouragement for those that are deeply impacted by this incident. Saying that Martin is a hero.
“Paul’s life was not lost. Deputy Paul Martin gave his life. He gave his life so that others might live.” said Wrigley.
Martin will be laid to rest at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan at a later date.
