Minnesota will welcome in new laws for 2024
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KVRR) — Minnesota is releasing new laws at the start of 2024. The state is unloading the largest tax-cut package in state history including cuts for social security tax for couples under the 100,000 dollar threshold.
If you’re a renter, tenants will have more rights. Landlords need to give notice before entering apartments, a 14-day eviction notice, and keep a minimum temperature of 68 to heat rentals in the winter.
State Senator Rob Kupec said, “We never set a minimum amount in the winter time of what they actually have to set that heat too so.”
Child healthcare is also being improved with children ages one to 20 having guaranteed coverage under the state.
Labor laws are also changing with a new Earned Safe and Sick Time law that gives more time for sick leave for people working over 80 hours a year. Kupec also said, “We want to make sure all workers have the ability to do that. 80% of Minnesota workers already have the qualifications that are in this earned sick and safe time. It’s really just that last 20% that we’re trying to cover here.”
There will also be new laws to help senior citizens including more funding for in-home care. The state will also be introducing “red flag laws” to protect citizens from gun violence allowing a guardian to intervene when someone’s at high risk of injuring someone or themselves with a firearm.
Kupec says these laws aren’t meant to take guns away from rightful citizens. “So before this happens, a court has to check of that this is a reasonable reason to go get somebody’s guns, and law enforcement also has to be part of that process before guns are confiscated so there are safeguards in place”
There are even new laws for transportation, allowing citizens to buy different kinds of license plates, and changes to the drivers license test to improve customer experience.
Another change happening is that lenders cannot charge more than 50 percent annual interest to help those who use short-term loans.
