Thief River Falls Man Accused of Attempting to Rob and Blow Up Hugo’s

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. (KVRR) — A Thief River Falls man is charged with attempted aggravated robbery after threatening to rob and blow up Hugo’s on December 30.
Court documents show 44-year-old Shawn Rud was masked when he walked into the grocery store and gave the clerk a note demanding money or he would detonate a bomb.
While the clerk looked around for a manager, Rud left the store without any money.
Police were able to tie him to the crime through surveillance footage of his shoes which matched surveillance of Rud at the Rusty Nail Bar in November.
They say Rud also called a hotline stating that he had a gun and was going to
shoot himself and was open to the idea of suicide by cop.
A search of his home on January 2 turned up evidence linking him to the attempted robbery and he was taken into custody.
Rud also faces a gross misdemeanor since he is not allowed to have ammunition.
Court records say Rud was committed by judicial determination that he was mentally ill and committed to a
treatment facility on or about 4/18/19.
His ability to possess firearms or ammunition had not been restored.
An initial appearance is set for Monday.
